JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. – As the 365th Engineer Battalion begins the construction exercise Castle Installation Related Construction 2016, the Army Reserve unit is focusing on growth at the squad level.
The 412th Theater Engineer Command has deemed fiscal year 2016 as the year of the squad leader. This is to reinforce how much authority, power and influence a squad leader really has.
“For us, this has been about putting our squad leaders out front and enhancing that squad,” said Lt. Col. Rick A. Ackerman, 365th commander. “That squad leader is mentoring those young Soldiers to replace him or her so the year of the squad leader really plays in to Castle IRC.”
Sgt. Brandon Myers of the 358th Engineer Company, New Cumberland, Pa., is a project site supervisor at one of these sites. As a squad leader, the Lancaster, Pa., native is serving in a position usually designated for an Army staff sergeant and exemplifies the qualities Ackerman describes.
“Being a manager is about putting the right personality in the right spot for the right project,” Myers said. “I know who I can trust to do certain things and who’s got the knowledge to do specific things.”
He explained how being close with them has affected their work. “They are really good at adjusting fire. I've been with them quite a bit for a while now. They're really good at saying, 'Alright. This isn't going to work so were going to do something else.' We make it happen.”
Sgt. Mark Kline, a carpenter from Quakertown, Pa., described Myers' leadership skills as amazing. “He comes from active duty experience. He was active duty a couple years ago, and he was also a drill sergeant so he knows how to lead from the front and not from the rear,” he said. “Plus he also gained the trust of everyone here already.”
Staff Sgt. Keith Blizzard from Union Bridge, Md., another construction supervisor with the 358th, only had praise for Myers and his Soldiers.
“They're great Soldiers ready to take on every new mission and anxious to get to work,” Blizzard said.
