BAGRAM AIRFIELD, AFGHANISTAN (June 14, 2016) - Today, the United States Army celebrates its 241st birthday. On this day in 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the formation of ten companies of expert riflemen from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia, which were directed to march to Boston to support the New England militia.

U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Jeffrey L. Bannister, Deputy Commander U.S. Forces Afghanistan shared his thoughts on the occasion by saying, “As we celebrate this 241st birthday of the U.S. Army, let us also celebrate the impact those great Soldiers who fought and died to ensure not only the freedom of our nation, but helping to make a better life for others. U.S. Soldiers have never faltered and have also been willing to “Climb to Glory.”

An Army Birthday ‘Bash’ was held here today at Bagram Airfield to mark the birthday of the United States’ largest and oldest military service.

“Today we celebrate the Army, Soldiers, families and civilians, past and present for their contributions and sacrifices. We are proud professionals - always ready and always leading.” said Lt. Col Cedric D. Gaskin, Battalion Commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 10th Mountain Division.

Coalition forces who live and work on the Joint Operations Center compound were invited to an afternoon of food, music and fun.

An al fresco meal served by the Bagram dinning facility was a rare treat for the USFOR-A team, who took a break from their normal routines in recognition of the significance of the day.

“It is time to stop and reflect on our historical accomplishments and the technological advancements available to the young people who serve in today’s all volunteer Army, those who have decided to serve their nation in one of the proudest branches of the U.S. military,” said Army Capt. Judith Morgan, Commander HQ Support Company, National Support Element, Bagram.

Capt. Morgan went on to say, “While tradition is always at the forefront of any Army event, this is definitely a celebration and an opportunity to show our appreciation to the Army as a whole.”
Avalanche, the latest deployed music performance team from Fort Drum provided ‘A Rock Show’ with music that spanned generations.

Their goal is to “entertain the entire audience,” according to Chief Warrant Officer 3 Donna Clickner, 10th Mountain Band Commander, who expressed the teams’ excitement at being a part of the celebration.

“We’re all celebrating the Army’s birthday together, with our comrades … and enjoy a little bit.” Said Chief Warrant Officer 2, Sean A. Calimawan.

The event gave pause in recognition of the 241st Birthday and the proud history of the U.S. Army and all which has made it great.
