CHELMNO, Poland – Polish President Andrzej Duda visited an engineering capabilities event in which soldiers from the British and German armies constructed a bridge across the Vistula River using M3 Amphibious Rigs, near Chelmno, Poland, June 12.

Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, commanding general of U.S. Army Europe, greeted President Duda at the event, where they walked onto the completed span to personally thank the engineers.

“Although this exercise has been going on for merely one week, it already demonstrates perfect integration of the units,” said Duda. “We can see through this exercise, the soldiers are well-prepared, well-trained and they are able to cooperate together to integrate their efforts.”

The engineers successfully assembled the entire bridge in approximately 45 minutes. Afterward, Duda and Hodges addressed the soldiers and the media in attendance.

“This Exercise Anakonda is participated by more than 31,000 soldiers, so it is clearly the biggest exercise that we have had after 1989,” said Duda. “It also shows that the alliance is able to defend the territories of all the allied member states in a very fast and very smooth way.”

Hodges said Exercise Anakonda 2016 is a great example of Poland’s leadership within the alliance. He feels this exercise has allowed the allied nations to improve interoperability, logistics, responsiveness and the ability to conduct operations.

“The cooperation between American soldiers and Polish soldiers, in particular, is better now than I have ever seen it,” Hodges said. “We’ve been allies in Iraq, allies in Afghanistan, allies in the Balkans but during this exercise, it’s reached a new level of teamwork and commitment.“

Exercise Anakonda 2016 is a Polish-led, multinational exercise taking place in Poland June 7-17. This is a premier training event for U.S. Army Europe and participating nations and demonstrates that the U.S. and partner nations can effectively consolidate under a unified command while training on a contemporary scenario.
