NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. —A new wireless internet and television service will be available to Airmen living in the dormitories on Nellis AFB.
Based to serve as a new option for dorm residents, Boingo Wireless will go live on Nellis AFB May 26, 2016, and have multiple packages available for Airmen to choose from.
According to Boingo, customers have the unique ability to create an account at one base, and seamlessly take it to another. Including Army, Air Force and Marine Corps bases.
Already being utilized on military bases around the country, the 99th Contracting Squadron served as the liaison to bring Boingo Wireless to the base in conjunction with the Army & Air Force Exchange Service and other base organizations for over 1,000 dorm residents.
“Our team came together last July with a kick-off meeting to get the ball rolling,” said Master Sgt. Sarah Gordon, 99th CONS superintendent. “The contractor came out for their initial site survey shortly after.
They had to work alongside 99th Communication Squadron for use of the existing fiber to get approval for their Radio and Frequency Plan, and wiring/antenna locations for each dorm building.”
All these different organizations worked together in order to provide a no setup, no installation appointment connection option to internet and television services to the dorm residents of Nellis AFB.
They also had to work with 99 Civil Engineer Squadron for environmental testing before they drilled into the dorm walls and floors,” said Gordon. “99th CES also had to approve their design package showing their wireless access points. Dorm management also played a major role providing escorts for the contractors, giving them access to dormitory buildings and rooms, and also providing them temporary
storage and office space to work out of while the installation took place.”
After connecting to the Boingo Wireless SSID and launching a browser, customers will see the landing page to the right with three different plans to choose from: Boingo Internet, Boingo TV or combo packages including both.
According to Boingo, internet plans are designed to allow the dorms residents to stream video, play video games and Skype with friends. Plans start at $49.95 a month for 30 mbps download speeds and $29.95 a month for 5 mbps download speeds.
Boingo’s television lineup can be used on smartphones, tablets, laptops and TV sets through Amazon Fire TV devices starting at $19.95 a month for the most popular channels including CNN, FX, TBS and TNT among others.
Not only can dorm residents choose to have both of these services separately, Boingo offers customers the option to combine their Boingo Internet and Core TV packages to upgrade to either Expanded or Standard Combos. With the expanded combo containing the 30 mbps internet speed with the Core TV stations and the Standard having 5 mbps with the Core TV package.
The new internet option not only requires no set up on the part of the dorm resident, but the flexible plan durations allow customers to select from day, week, to monthly recurring options with internet for different price points that will be accessible when signing up for the internet services.
During the “wire” cutting ceremony for Boingo Internet, held May 31 at Nellis AFB, Col. Richard Boutwell, 99th Air Base Wing commander, expressed his gratitude towards not only AAFES, but also every base organization that played a role in bringing the new Wi-Fi option to the dorms.
“I’d like to say thank you to AAFES for the partnership, as well with our team, that helps provide welfare tools to our Airmen and help them as they live here on base,” said Boutwell. “Facilitating their needs to make connections to home and keeping them connected with all that they need to be. So to provide a high quality of life for dorm residents that AAFES has continued to provide, and partnered with us, we appreciate it.”
