The 610th Quartermaster Company and 630th Quarter Master Detachment, Virgin Islands National Guard completed a water purification mission at Susana Santana Ocasio Park, Altona Lagoon, St. Croix, VI during Operation Forward Guard IV training exercise from May 31- June 5.

Soldiers began the water purification process by throwing a dolphin strainer 10 feet into the ocean. The strainer collects water through a hose which flows into several filters and chemicals in the reverse osmosis water purification unit (ROWPU). After the water was purified and tested to regulation, it was then pumped into a 3000 gallon collapse tank.

“The whole process usually takes about 30 minutes depending on the feed flow. Once we set everything up and start that control panel we let the machine do its work,” said Spc. Craig Richards, a water purification specialist, 610th Quartermaster Company.

The purified water was then transported in water containers commonly called a hippo. Approximately 8000 gallons of water was transported to the weekend training site (WETS) daily during the exercise. This provided soldiers with fresh water to take showers, cook, wash their hands and perform personal hygiene.

“The cooperative water purification and distribution operation at the Altona Lagoon with 610th Quartermaster was very enlightening,” said Sgt. 1st Class Stacey Bowers-Williams, the Noncommissioned officer in charge of 630th Quarter Master Detachment. “The soldiers were enthused with Staff Sgt. Proctor’s instructions and vast knowledge on water operation.”

The two units, residing separately on St. Croix and St. Thomas, regularly come together during the annual exercise to improve their teamwork and craft of water purification and transportation.
