“We want to show them what we’re doing at our tactical level to accomplish strategic objectives…that partnership piece.”

V/O: THAT PARTNERSHIP BEGAN IN 1996, THE EXERCISE INVOLVED JUST THREE NATIONS, WHICH GAVE THE NAME “TRI,” AND THE “CRAB” IS AFFECTIONATELY NAMED AFTER THE EOD BADGE WORN BY ALL FOUR BRANCHES OF THE MILITARY.

NAT SOUND POP: FROM THE BOAT

V/O: THIS YEAR…..TEAMS FROM CANADA, AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND AND SINGAPORE ALONG WITH U.S. FORCES FROM THE AIR FORCE, MARINE CORPS AND NAVY SPENT THREE WEEKS LEARNING FROM EACH OTHER TO IMPROVE READINESS IN THE EVENTUALITY THEY’LL BE WORKING TOGETHER FOR ANY WIDE RANGE OF MISSIONS, INCLUDING DETERRING AGGRESSION IN THE INDO-ASIA-PACIFIC REGION.

SOUNDBITE: Able Diver Kyran Bennett, Royal New Zealand Navy :10
“But the most challenging thing was I guess learning their techniques. I really wanted to get on the American guys equipment and sort of just learn from them as well.”

V/O: THE TEAMS WERE OF MIXED NATIONALITIES AND SPENT A LOT OF TIME ON THE WATER JUST OUTSIDE APRA HARBOR…HELOCASTING AND SETTING OFF CHARGES….IMPROVING ENDURANCE, TIMING AND TEAMWORK.

    Nat sound/SB: EOD3 Jeffrey Ottele, EODMU5 :08
“I’ve seen a lot of people try and beat the ocean and I’ve never seen anybody win.”

V/O: CHALLENGING AT TIMES, BUT GUAM’S WARM WATERS AND LAND-BASED TRAINING RANGES OFFERED THE TEAMS SOME OF THE BEST CONDITIONS IN THE PACIFIC EXPLAINS LT GOLDBERG FROM THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY.

SOUNDBITE: LT Evgeny Goldberg, Royal Australian Navy :22
“But particularly Guam presents a lot of opportunities that you don’t get in other places. The visibility here that you get underwater here is more than 30 meters or 90 feet, so that provides you an excellent training opportunity for the guys that haven’t had the opportunity to train with U.S. forces. So when they go down they’ll have excellent visibility and quite a safe working environment.”

SOUNDBITE: CDR Ben Cipperley, CO of EOD MU FIVE
“This training doesn’t start and end in Guam. It’s starts five years ago when the first time that somebody went to Australia on a training exercise or the first time an Australian came here and we build upon that.”

V/O: WITH MOST PEOPLE USING SOCIAL MEDIA AND EMAIL, IT’S EASY FOR THESE GUYS TO MAINTAIN CONTACT AND KEEP IN TOUCH.

SOUNDBITE: LT Goldberg, Royal Australian Navy :22
“We all want to share the EOD knowledge and make sure we all equalize at the same level and we’re all swimming at the same depth.”

STANDUP: THE TOP THREE TAKESAWAYS FROM TRICRAB16 …INTEROPERABILTY, THE CHANCE TO EXCHANGE IDEAS AND BEST PRACTICES. THE SOCIAL AND CULTURAL EXCHANGES THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME AND THAT GUAM IS A FANTASTIC TRAINING LOCATION WITH YEAR-ROUND GREAT WEATHER AND SOME OF THE BEST DIVING CONDITIONS IN THE PACIFIC. REPORTING FROM NAVAL BASE GUAM, I'M AMY FORSYTHE
