Story by Tech. Sgt. Phillip Butterfield

    4th Fighter Wing

Most people have heard that the U.S. Military is strong, proud and intimidating to the enemy however; there are other words that describe who they are such as considerate, thankful and good stewards.

This stewardship has been put on display like it always is when the U.S. Military uses another countries base to conduct operations whether combat or humanitarian. Here at Forward Operating Bases Alpha, making things better is what’s on the menu and FOB A’s featured chef is 1st Lt. Walter Rau, Task Force Red Wolf mayor.

“It’s about being good stewards to the areas that we are allowed to use,” said Rau. “My personal policy is always to leave things better then how I found it plus, to have the opportunity to learn about different cultures is always a good thing.”

Rau and his team of engineers are tasked with making transportation easier on base and building beautification.

“Before coming down to Guatemala, the U.S. and Guatemalan governments made an agreement that we [U.S. Military] would improve the roads, parking lots and infrastructure of the bases that they let us use,” said Rau. “That was the basic recipe but, we have the attendance to be over achievers so, besides fixing buildings and roads we improved the base’s drainage, large vehicle parking area and staging area.”

All this work, as not gone unnoticed besides the reports being sent to both governments the local Guatemalan soldiers have seen and are pleased with the improvements.

“I’m happy that this is getting done,” said Guatemalan Sgt. Christian Paz, Brigade Operations Para Montana infantry soldier. “The U.S. Soldiers work quickly and they use superior materials and technics and their work looks great.”

As the time for Task Force Red Wolf’s departure from Guatemala draws ever near, more projects will be sited and accomplished. Ensuring that the legacy of the U.S. Military's involvement here will be something of discussion in future meetings the two governments will have.

“History has shown that wherever the U.S. Military goes we make things better,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Darrell Martin, TFRW commander. “This is the way it has been and this is the way it will be. We are not occupiers we are allies and friends and I’m proud of the service members that make this a reality.”
