KEYPORT, Wash. (May 25, 2016) – Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) hosted their 8th annual Safety Fair at NBK–Keyport May 26.
The Safety Fair is held prior to Memorial Day weekend in conjunction with the 101 Critical Days of Summer.
“We are here to bring safety vendors and commands together to increase safe use of motor vehicles,” said Shawn Seiber, NBK safety specialist. “It started out as a motorcycle safety event, back then we had a high motorcycle fatality rate throughout the Navy.”
Volunteers from the Navy Exchange, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Submarine Development Squadron 5 (COMSUBDEVRON FIVE), and Naval Hospital Bremerton assisted vendors in supporting the safety fair.
“This is the kick-off for 101 Critical Days of Summer,” said Wayne Ferber, NBK Safety Specialist. “The fair came from the Navy program to prevent motor vehicle accidents and grew into a full safety fair.”
NBK’s commanding officer attended and spoke to the attendants.
“I’m appreciative of NBK Safety, the Fire Department, COMSUBDEVRON 5, and all participants that made this fair a reality,” said Capt. Tom Zwolfer, NBK’s commanding officer. “I think it is important to reflect on some of the hazards involved in our activities so that we can have a good time while protecting ourselves and others.”
COMSUBDEVRON 5 held a fundraiser and cooked food for the fair.
“Our First Class Petty Officer Association has been invited to the fair for the past five years,” said Cryptologic Technician (Collection) 1st Class Josh Olson, assigned to COMSUBDEVRON 5. “We come out to support our Navy in the Pacific Northwest.”
Other safety fairs were held throughout Navy Region Northwest.
