NEW YORK – Marines, sailors and coastguardsmen arrived in New York for Fleet Week 2016 Wednesday, sailing from across the country to celebrate the nation’s sea services and honor those who have given their lives in service to their country.

A USO sponsored event at the Hard Rock Café in Times Square helped kick off Fleet Week by providing entertainment, music, food and drinks for the service members and special guests as they begin the week of events.

“This is one of the iconic weeks in New York,” said Brian Whiting, president and CEO of the metropolitan USO in New York City. “It’s an opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to the men and women who serve our country.”

Marines with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit will attend more than 200 events throughout the Memorial Day weekend, exploring the city, connecting with Americans and displaying the capabilities of the United States Marine Corps.

“We are fortunate. We walk about the streets of New York and we don’t think twice about our safety and security because of the hard work and the good work that our military does here at home and abroad,” said Whiting. “It’s a fun and exciting time in New York. It’s one of the largest fleet weeks we have had with more than 4,500 Marines, sailors and coastguardsmen and that adds to the excitement.”

For the past 28 years, Marines and sailors have visited New York City in the famed ‘Fleet Week.’ Long after the celebration and Memorial Day Weekend comes to an end, America’s service members will remain ready and willing to serve the American people in any clime or place.

“The Navy and Marines are always ready for anything the nation calls on them to do,” said 1st Lt. Brian Real, an information officer with the 24th MEU. “We are of course very grateful for everything America allows us to do.”
