GARMISCH, Germany, 23 May, 2016 -- Great medical minds from across Europe, Asia, Africa and the United States conversed during this year’s European African Military Nursing Exchange (EAMNE) Conference and The Eurasia Africa military Medical (TEAMM) Summit from May 23 - 26.

U.S. Air Forces in Africa command and the Regional Health Command Europe hosted their events jointly for the first time this year. The TEAMM and EAMNE have been brought together as a Joint Army and Air Force seminar in an effort to enhance the overall experience for the attendees and create transparency between the two military services.

The collaborative conferences gave medical professionals, from military and civilian communities, an opportunity to learn, discuss and observe different medical techniques and concepts from a variety of specialties. The four-day event showcased advancements in anesthesia, intensive care, primary care, orthopedics, pediatrics and radiology as well as highlighted some of the U.S. and foreign countries mobile medical response capabilities.

Medical representatives from 14 different countries brought not only new diversity to the conferences, but also emulated some of the same medical practices as their partnering military colleagues. Several medical attendees from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands demonstrated their past deployment experience with the United States during forward operating missions, while other countries such as the Zambian Defense Force and Ghana Armed Forces expressed their past medical training with U.S. Air Forces in Africa medical teams.

“This conference has actually brought us together in a way that we are looking at a common goal, which is the patient. I was mostly touched by the presentation on the health care leadership, which I think we can implement in all our healthcare facilities, “said Colonel Joyce Chongo, the Director of Nursing Services in the Zambian Defense Force.

These types of joint medical collaborative efforts not only increases future military interoperability capabilities between the U.S. and its allied partners but also enhances each individual as a medical provider.

TEAMM is normally held twice a year as a way for U.S. Military medical personal to maintain their medical credentialing. The Regional Health Command Europe has held the summit for approximately 45 years while the EAMNE is a fairly newer concept which brings other medical interests.

“The major take away for our participants is that what we do in various countries is very similar because our main focal point is the patient and so it’s really encouraging to hear from the other nations on how they deliver healthcare. We realized that we are not to far off and that the patient is our primary focus” U.S. Air Force Colonel Barbara Jones, the Deputy Command Surgeon of U.S. Air Forces in Europe and U.S. Air Force in Africa.

Both units plan on continuing their individual efforts and with the success of combining the two conferences they will continue to better equip medical professionals, enhance patient care and assist in working towards interoperability with their partnering nations.
