The 7th Annual 1st Marine Aircraft Wing Volunteer Luncheon was held May 5th, 2016, on Camp Foster’s Butler Officers’ Club to recognize married service members and spouses that went above and beyond the call of duty for volunteer services.

The awards were presented by 1st MAW’s commanding general and his spouse as well as the commanding officers for each squadron.

“The individuals showed consistent support and positive impact on the local and military community throughout the past year,” said Tolondra Johnson, the Family Readiness Officer for 1st MAW. “Approximately 70 Marines and spouses were awarded for their achievements.”

The event was hosted after 1st MAW made it a priority to revamp the volunteer program offering new and unique ways for people to volunteer. With these new found efforts launched, the volunteer numbers came close to tripling.

“The unit revamped its programs through the leadership focusing on increasing volunteerism in the squadrons, as well as encouraging on and off base volunteer opportunities,” said Tolondra. “The revamp also attempted to best fit the interests and passions of the volunteers.”

A separate volunteer event will recognize single volunteers later on this year.

“1st MAW has made great strides to increase volunteerism,” said Tolondra. “The efforts are so successful that two separate events are being held to recognize everyone! Our service members and their families are eagerly searching for and filling volunteer roles and having fun in the process. Due to this, morale has been higher, squadrons are witnessing greater unit cohesion, and family members are feeling included and appreciated for what they are doing. It's truly exciting to witness!“
