No more than one year ago, Brenden Jarvis was selling shoes at a Dick’s Sporting Goods in Lakewood, Colorado. Now, as Private Jarvis, he proudly carries the title Marine.
Born in Grand Junction, Jarvis moved to Lakewood at an early age, and stayed there until he joined the Marine Corps.
“I always considered the military as an option,” said Jarvis. “I’ve had a lot of family who have served, but they were in different branches. Being the Marine in my family feels pretty awesome.”
In order to get an understanding for what career path would best suit him; Jarvis took a year off from education after graduating high school.
“School was never his favorite thing,” said Amy Jarvis, Brenden’s mother. “He is very athletic, and that’s what he enjoyed. I’m glad he took a year off, to see what he wanted to do in life.”
While Jarvis’ said that the military was always an option for him, his mother believes that it was almost guaranteed.
“Even as a middle schooler, he always had this desire to protect people,” said Amy. “He would always look out for the underdog, so it doesn’t surprise me that he wants to protect his country.”
According to Staff Sgt. Scott Rosenbach, a recruiter with Recruiting Station Denver, Jarvis displayed commendable traits from their first meeting.
“I immediately saw him as a Marine,” Said Rosenbach. “The way he carried himself, how he was well spoken and polite, even in the job he had. You could see it wasn’t just a job to him.”
With recruit training completed and some well-deserved time home, Jarvis says he has enjoyed his life as a Marine so far.
“After all the hardships I’ve gone through to earn the title, and after seeing the demeanor and the confidence Marines have about themselves, to say that I’m a part of that is amazing,” said Jarvis. “If I had to go through it again, I would. It was definitely worth it.”
