New drivers at Task Force Red Wolf took part in a drivers safety stand down before they hit the road May 23, 2016, during Exercise BEYOND THE HORIZON 2016 Guatemala.
In an effort to mitigate future accidents the TFRW Safety Office along with the support of the engineers and medical staff created a drivers safety course. This course included a video that shows the driving habits of local Guatemalans and the road conditions they will experience.
The second portion of the course was a hands on demonstration of required breaking procedures required to navigate the mountainous terrain. Some of the mountain roads the Soldiers will need to negotiate are at 20 to 25 degrees of incline.
“The course was good,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Walter Warren, 1021st Engineer Company heavy equipment operator. “The video was really helpful, I’m glad we were able to see how some of the local drivers operated their vehicles. It’s better this way then to be surprised by it later.”
