Molding and inspiring the next generation of Marines is often under appreciated, but the Combat Instructor of the Year award recognizes these leaders and all they do for the future of the Corps.

"I think there are many other instructors that could have easily been selected before me for this distinction," said Staff Sgt. Jonathon Manuel, combat instructor of two years with School of Infantry - East and recipient of the 2015 Combat Instructor of the Year award. "I'm honored that I was selected despite the incredibly competitive and competent combat instructors that I have the privilege to work with."

The Combat Instructor of the Year award is recognition from the commandant of the Marine Corps for being considered the best instructors in the Corps.
"Other than the long days, being a combat instructor is an extremely rewarding job," said Manuel. "We take raw Marines and spend hour after hour training and evaluating them. They are our replacements in the operation forces, and we do a great job teaching, coaching and mentoring those young Marines into basically-trained infantryman."

Hundreds of combat instructors from SOI-East and SOI-West were also considered to win the award.

"I hope that I have set the example for what to do when it may seem unclear," said Manuel. "I don't believe I possess any special or unattainable skills, I just try to bring a strong work ethic and clear goals for what needs to be accomplished every day."

Manuel received the honor in Quantico, Virginia, as this is the second instructor in a row from SOI-East who will take home the prestigious award.

"I hope people understand that we take the gravity of our jobs extremely serious; we don't see ourselves as troop handlers or any other term that was associated with the School of Infantry in years before," said Manuel. "I take a lot of pride in my selection as Combat Instructor of the Year and will do everything I can to demonstrate the professionalism and competence that I have gained from this tour in order to promote our organization."
