PHOENIX – The Arizona National Guard Human Resources Office held its first internal career fair at the Allen Readiness Center at Papago Park Military Reservation May 15 to fill open full-time positions with qualified guardsmen.
The career fair garnered success with 12 interviews scheduled and two on-the-spot hires in the first hour. By the end of the day, 20 guardsmen interviewed for 28 positions resulting in eight immediate job offers.
Tech. Sgt. Englecia Douglas, a Human Resource Specialist and one of the organizers of the career fair, said the event was a great success in matching talents of the service members with career opportunities within the Arizona National Guard.
“This really helps the HRO to reach out to vocationally talented Soldiers who may not know we exist,” Douglas said. “It allows us to reach a larger audience during a drill weekend, and to determine what may be lacking in our job marketing process and assess the need for more classes and seminars to help prepare our guardsmen for government service.”
Nearly 100 Soldiers attended the event, which sought to educate guardsmen on the application process and match qualified guardsmen with open Active Guard and Reserve, Federal Technician, and Active Duty Operational Support positions in the Arizona National Guard.
“As a hiring manager, I came here expecting nothing like this,” said Army Master Sgt. Richard Bojorquez-Davila. “I had a checklist of what I was looking for in terms of desirable hiring qualities and the first person I interviewed was perfect. He met all the requirements on my list and I hired him right there. It made an otherwise very long process fast.”
Spc. Anthony Sepulveda is a communication specialist during his Army National Guard drill weekends, and was the career fair’s first hiring success. His previous work experience included work as a personal banker where he developed a successful set of customer service skills.
“I’m excited to be hired as a Fed Tech,” Sepulveda said. “The opportunity to become a human resource specialist will allow me to develop on a professional side that differs from my previous civilian jobs. It will provide financial stability and allow me to engage with my Army leadership more often.”
Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Joyce Hanson, a supervising human resource specialist for benefits, also conducted a successful interview for a vacant position in her office.
“I hired the ideal candidate with a background in military intelligence,” Hanson said. “He demonstrated great attention to detail and the desire to help people. He was very excited for the opportunity to be a Federal Technician because it aligned with his goals for his military career as well.”
The current unemployment rate in Arizona is six percent, slightly higher than the national average of 5.4 percent. The Arizona National Guard Human Resource Office consistently looks for ways to provide service members with more opportunities for full-time employment in government service, helping provide unemployed or underemployed service members a chance for better wages and benefits.
