Approximately 166 Marines, Soldiers and civilians participated in the third annual NO MORE 5K Run/Walk aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Calif., April 15.
“The 5K is a fun way to get the word out about increasing awareness of sexual assault and domestic violence in communities,” said Michelle Lawing, the sexual assault response coordinator for MCLB Barstow. “NO MORE is supported by major organizations working to address these issues. It is gaining support by sparking new conversations about these programs and moving this cause higher on public agenda.”
“It’s (abuse) one of those taboo things that no one really talks about,” said Jill Crumpler, Marine Corps Family Team Building trainer. “I think bringing it out in the open to discuss it makes it easier for someone else to get the help they need.”
“I like to run,” said Cristina Zamora, postal clerk on base. “I love cardio. It’s a good way to get a workout in while raising awareness for a good cause.”
In addition to the 5K, there are Self Defense classes on base which are intended to heighten awareness of these issues. The next class, hosted by Family Advocacy Program and Sexual Assault Prevention Response will be held at 6 p.m. on May 18 at Semper Fit Gym.
All Marines, Soldiers, their dependents and Department of Defense personnel aboard base are welcome to participate in these events. For additional information about these events or the various services and programs offered by FAP and SAPR, contact Behavioral Health Branch at 577-6533.
