CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – Camp Pendleton celebrated the Fisher House Camp Pendleton’s first year of service here, May 16.

The Fisher House Camp Pendleton is a ‘home away from home’ for families of service members who are receiving medical treatment at the Naval Hospital. The house provides a temporary free lodging, enabling them to be close during a medical crisis.

“Marines take pride in taking care of our own and we didn’t do that good of a job before we had this house, because we knew when one of our Marines was ill, injured or wounded that we have to take care of the families,” said Brig. Gen. Edward D. Banta, the Commanding General of Marine Corps Installation- West Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.

The Fisher House Camp Pendleton has housed and provided care to a total of 133 families during its first year of service and will continue to support service member’s families unable to gather the funds during difficult times.

“When you can provide the comfort of having a house, the comfort of having not just the physical place to stay, but more important than that, the support you get from other families that are dealing with similar crises, the difference you make in people’s lives is incredible,” said Anthony Lonigro, CEO of United Health Care Military and Veterans West Region.

At the one year anniversary ceremony, employee volunteers from United Health Care assembled 300 personal care kits that will be used for families staying at the Fisher House Camp Pendleton in the future.

“The military families to me are the bedrock that makes our military very strong,” said Lonigro.

The Fisher House Camp Pendleton costed $2.65 million to construct and opened in May 2015. The house features eight suites and is 8,000 square feet.

Funding for the Fisher House Camp Pendleton was due to a grant from United Health Foundation.

“It’s a beautiful facility and state-of-the-art,” said Lonigro. “It’s really a first class health care being provided here. It’s a place that you can’t really replicate under any other setting.”

The Fisher House motto is that ‘a family’s love is good medicine.’
