    Story by Spc. Allen Griffith

    29th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment

PAO: When did you start your focus on physical fitness?
CW4 Alequine: I started wrestling my freshman year of high school and I first touched the weights in my sophomore year.

PAO: When did you begin to recognize the results of your workouts?
CW4 Alequine: In my freshman year I ended the wrestling season with a record of 0-6, but in my senior year, I won the county championship.

PAO: How did you develop your workout routine?
CW4 Alequine: Listening and learning from others at the gym. I committed myself to the gym everyday. As my awareness and understanding grew, I began to shape my own workout routines.

PAO: What impact has physical fitness had on your military career?
CW4 Alequine: I think it has had a great impact. To be physically fit where you can lead from the front and lead younger soldiers in a run or whatever the challenge may be. I can remember one year I did a confidence course at Fort Dix in the 100degrees temperature with an MP (Military Police) unit. So out of all the MP units, they picked the personnel guy to represent. Having a strong physical fitness background has endeared me to people.

PAO: What type of military training have you had on physical fitness?
CW4 Alequine: I went to the Master Fitness Course.

PAO: What are some of your physical fitness accomplishments?
CW4 Alequine: I finished 29th in a field of 500 in the Norwegian Ruck March Challenge. I was 46 [years old] at the time. This ruck march consisted of carrying 25 pounds of food for 18.6 miles. Another accomplishment I am very proud of is getting my wife into a 5k. My wife hated physical fitness for years and would not do it. Now she has become addicted to running for the first time in her life. When you can reach some one and get them to enjoy physical fitness, that is a breakthrough. That is a good feeling.

PAO: What are some of the rewards you received from your physical fitness knowledge and capabilities?
CW4 Alequine: When you give someone advice and they pass their PT test, and come back to tell you they passed, that is what I am talking about. Also, it’s a good feeling when you can get through to someone and make them enjoy physical fitness.

PAO: Can you describe your current workout routine?
CW4 Alequine: Run every day, at least one mile. Running is a total body workout. I will do weight training every other day.

PAO: Can you describe your diet?
CW4 Alequine: As I am getting older, I have reduced the bread and fried foods. I don’t drink soda. There hasn’t been a soda in my house in 30 years. I drink a lot of water every day, protein shakes and cook all of my meals. I pack a lunch every day.

PAO: Any future physical fitness goals?
CW4 Alequine: I haven’t really set any. I thought I would turn to running more or playing softball. I never really had a chance to play on a softball team. I would enjoy the camaraderie with softball. My one goal would be to maintain my regiment and be dedicated to my physical fitness.
PAO: What other motivation would you want to give soldiers?
CW4 Alequine: An IT guy on the civilian side only has to be smart in order to do his job. In the military, the IT guy must also match his civilian counterpart’s competency while also achieving physical fitness standards in order to meet his Warrior Ethos.
