FORT STEWART, Ga. (May 4, 2016) – Fort Stewart's Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Programs bring Soldiers together with intramural sports.
“I like participating in this league, because it’s a great way to get to meet new people in your battalion and company,” said Spc. Nicardo White, a wheeled vehicle mechanic for 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division.
“The reason why we have intramural sports is to build the moral and welfare of the Soldiers, it builds esprit de corps and camaraderie,” said Michael Hughes, sports director at Hunter Army Airfield.
The intramural program consists of basketball, volleyball, flag football, softball, track and field, golf, bowling, tennis, soccer and racquetball. League and tournament competition is offered in all sports. Persons wishing to participate can enter the company-level league, 35 and older battalion league, female battalion league or the family member’s league.
“There’s something for everyone,” said Hughes “The units organize their teams based on the sports season and then submit their memorandum and roster to their sports director.”
With Army intramural sports programs, service members can tackle a new sport or get better at one they enjoy. The MWR encourages participation by units and provides instruction, practice and competition opportunities for all skill levels, according to their website.
At the conclusion of each sport, an installation champion is determined by a tournament although it's not completely about competition, it's about having fun.
“This league was started for soccer players who want to have fun here at Fort Stewart,” said White.
When one league ends another begins, so there isn’t much down time, according to Hughes. He also said whether Soldiers are at Fort Stewart or moving to their next installation, the program’s schedule is streamlined across the Army.
“All the installations mirror the sports calendar,” said Hughes.
Soccer recently ended for the year, softball takes place until July, and flag football starts in August.
