Two Marine Corps installations received the highest recognition in the 2015 Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Energy and Water Management Awards: Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Pendleton, and Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Camp Pendleton. The award recognizes outstanding accomplishments in energy and water conservation and management. MCB and MCAS Camp Pendleton were recognized at the Platinum level in the “USMC Large Shore” and “USMC Small Shore” categories, respectively.
"We have increased our efforts in energy and resource conservation,” said Brig. Gen. Edward Banta, Commanding General of MCIWEST. “Not only is Camp Pendleton implementing new energy-efficient technologies, we are being mindful of these changes and quantifying them to help us understand the positive impact of reduced consumption. Opening that discussion is an important step in building a better future for Camp Pendleton which means better training for our Marines and Sailors."
Technical efficiency efforts allowed the base to reduce energy usage intensity (EUI) – the amount of energy in relation to the square footage of a facility – by 31.9 percent since 2003, with 12.6 percent of it being in the last year. This exceeds federal goals and places MCB Camp Pendleton near the top of energy reducers.
This was achieved by investing $26M in energy conservation measures impacting over 1,000 buildings, including upgrading lights to efficient and Light Emitting Diode (LED) fixtures and installing more advanced heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) units. These projects, combined with 10 new megawatts (MW) of solar power that were brought online, ensure that MCB Camp Pendleton is reducing its energy consumption without compromising mission readiness or quality of life.
At the air station, strong support from Public Works and leadership helped the energy program develop similar efficient projects, including the conversion of all hangars to LED lighting, and the installation of new solar arrays and solar thermal heating systems at the Hangar 6 and Armory buildings that reduce need for external electricity and gas and save $28,000 a year.
MCAS Camp Pendleton also used data from a monthly report to inform stakeholders of their building’s energy consumption, and specific measures that could be taken to improve performance. The resulting technological advances, paired with thorough communication efforts, reduced EUI by 10.2 percent over just the past year alone.
MCB and MCAS Camp Pendleton were recognized for this award in an ALNAV message. The installations will also receive monetary awards to further support the transformation of our culture as the Corps further optimizes our use of energy and water to enhance our mission effectiveness.
