FORT BRAGG, N.C. – The sun rose in the east and the day felt like it should have been over already. For Soldiers competing in the 2016 U.S. Army Reserve Best Warrior Competition sunrise met them four hours into their day, at the end of an arduous 10-kilometer foot march.

The finish line led competitors directly to the Air Assault Obstacle Course; another task in the quest for the 2016 USAR Best Warrior title.

Soldiers were scored on their ability to quickly and safely move throughout the course.
To up the ante and make the course even more challenging, Soldiers were timed on their ability to traverse each obstacle without falling off or failing to complete.

The weaver, inclining wall, and swing – stop –jump obstacles were only a few of the seven of the physically demanding hurdles they faced this humid May morning.

The weaver was the biggest and tallest of the timed obstacles. Sgt. David Brown, a drill sergeant from 98th Training Division (IET), guided and motivated Soldiers as they struggled to complete his portion of the course.

“You have eaten your Warrior Ethos breakfast,” Brown yelled as he pushed Soldiers to challenge their fears.

One competitor, Spc. Sarah Preston, a Paralegal Specialist representing the U.S. Army Reserve Legal Command, was hesitant and thought about skipping the obstacle and accepting the pending score penalty. Brown stopped her and challenged her to try.

“No one has failed my task and you will not be the first,” he yelled. In addition to Brown, her peers chimed in while they waited for their turn at the overwhelming obstacle. The wooden beam mass proved to be no match for her willpower and dedication as Preston completed the obstacle.

Although grueling at times, Soldiers at the Air Assault Obstacle Course were supporting each other as teammates, even though they were competitors all vying for the Best Warrior title.
