Spc. Connor Walraven, from Poughkeepsie, New York and Staff Sgt. Joseph Young, from Indianapolis, Indiana, are competing this week, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina for the right to call themselves the 2016 Army Reserve Best Warriors.

Young, who Walraven praised for taking time to help with his preparation while he himself was readying himself to compete, says he wants “to be the example of what being a leader and Noncommissioned Officer means.”

But Young’s passion isn’t limited to living The Creed of the Noncommissioned Officer. His first passion is music. And that passion started with a piano at the age of three.

“I play music because it is art, it is communication, and it is a communal endeavor,” said Young.

Young continued, “Music has many healing qualities…I play music to offer whatever it is the listener wants to interpret from it; healing, empathy, sympathy, a good laugh, a good cry, a good party.”

Both Soldiers shared the idea that music played a major key in resiliency and the belief that resiliency was important in the readiness of units, adding to the importance of Army musicians.

“We are the face of the Army… It’s an honor to serve with the people who wear this uniform,” said Walraven.

Young added, “in 2009 and 2010 I was chosen to render Taps at the Indianapolis 500, so the world heard me pay my respects to all fallen Soldiers on Memorial Day. I was very honored to be chosen to do that.”
