Ombudsman at Large Visits Navy Families in Korea

The Chief of Naval Operations Ombudsman at Large (OAL), Mrs. Martha Faller visited Navy spouses and met with U.S. Naval Forces and Navy Region Korea leadership, May 2.

The visit gave Faller an opportunity to talk about the challenges faced by Navy families living in the Republic of Korea.

“This trip allows me to touch base with the families in Korea,” Faller said. “As an OAL, I go where the ombudsmen are to see what issues they are facing so being able to talk all day with families and get insightful feedback is a gift.”

Faller said that the ombudsman program provides improved mission readiness because an active ombudsman program ensures that commands and their families have the tools and information needed to meet the challenges of a military lifestyle.

“Our ombudsman program ensures commanders and commanding officers have a better understanding of the welfare of families at their command,” Faller said.

Jessica Hentze, the ombudsman for Commander, Naval Forces Korea, said she felt grateful to talk with Mrs. Faller and discuss several topics relevant to Navy Korea families.

“She (Faller) is very empowering, encouraging, and resourceful,” Hentze said. “She knows military families work together to overcome issues, so we’re all in the same boat.”

During her visit with families, Faller encouraged spouses to become more engaged in their community and spoke about the important role families, and the ombudsman program, provide for the Navy.

The Fleet is only as strong as the Navy family, Faller said. “The work the ombudsmen do is mission critical, and they deserve our respect and support.”

The Ombudsmen-at-Large is tasked by the Chief of Naval Operations to improve family readiness by advising him and the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy on matters affecting Sailors and their families.
