Defying the stereotype of being a ‘girly girl,’ Spc. Kayla Bundy, a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic with 1st Battalion, 414th Infantry Regiment, 95th Training Division (IET) participates in many events thought to be male dominated.
Cowgirl, mechanic, Crossfit participant, 2016 U.S. Army Reserve Best Warrior contender- Bundy doesn’t let her size determine her destiny. Though she may be small, the specialist says she is a force to be reckoned with.
“I wouldn’t say much to those observing me in the competition, I’ll show them on the ball field,” said Bundy.
Growing up in Saint George, Utah, this country girl began doing rodeo at a young age. Raised on a ranch and not afraid to get her hands dirty, Bundy has experience in goat tying, team roping, hunting and more. On top of all that, she played softball in high school and two years in college.
“I played travel/club softball year round in high school and received a softball scholarship to the College of Southern Nevada in Henderson, Nevada,’ said Bundy.
In December 2012, Bundy enlisted into the Army Reserve. She has progressively worked hard to build her military resume by being both physically fit and professionally competent.
Lacking no desire to achieve, Bundy was selected by her command to compete in the 2016 BWC two weeks prior to the event.
“I embrace the suck, no false motivation here, I’d like to say I bring motivation to this competition,” said Bundy.
With aspirations of training Soldiers on basic Military Skills, Bundy looks to the day when she dons the green Australian bush hat, so commonly worn by a drill sergeant.
To become a drill sergeant would mean the world to Bundy.
“Drill Sergeants are proficiently trained to the standard. They know what it takes to be a Soldier”
Though small in stature with but a few years in service; Bundy has only achieved a fraction of the goals she’s set for herself. With her fierce competitive nature, and desire to win, it’s only a matter of time before she’s seen as the giant that she truly is.
