The first event was the Army Physical Fitness Test which measures the muscular strength, endurance and cardiovascular respiratory fitness of Soldiers.

This was the first time I conducted an APFT in the rain, said Spc. JanMichael Armijo, a Satellite Communications Systems Operator – Maintainer representing the 1st Mission Support Command at the Best Warrior Competition.

“I have to try to excel in any situation that I am faced with,” said Sgt.1st Class Jeffery Ramer, a combat engineer representing the 416th Engineer Command (Theater). “I did not make the time that I wanted, but I am still in the fight.”

“I am not focused on the event that just passed, I am looking toward the next one,” he said.

“I did OK on it (the APFT); I actually dropped my run (time),” said Spc. Kayla Bundy, a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic representing the 108th Training Command (IET).
The second event was an appearance board comprised of five Command Sgts. Maj. from within the Army Reserves.

“I missed one question, but there’s always that one,” said Armijo after he appeared.

“I definitely think I did a lot better at my last board with the 108th Training Command Competition, but I did pretty well here too,” said Bundy.

While Soldiers were waiting for their appointed slot to appear before the board, they also had to complete a 50 question exam and a written essay.

With the first day complete, Soldiers are beginning to become mentally and physically tired. Being ready at a moment’s notice is a requirement emplaced on all Soldiers within the Army Reserve.
