Sgt. Charles Ward, the brigade logistics network manager with Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 69th ADA Bde., escorted Troop 159 from Bryan, Texas.

Ward mentored the Boy Scouts during their visit to the Engagement Skills Trainer 2000, where he explained weapon safety and assisted with firing methods.

“It’s step by step to show them the safety procedures that we go through whenever we operate a range,” Ward explained.

The Boy Scouts fired at targets projected onto a large screen as the semi-realistic kickback of the simulated M4 carbines and M16 rifles shook them.

Troop 159 has visited Fort Hood three times already, according to Roger Sheridan, the scoutmaster for the troop.

“Fort Hood offers a variety of things that most kids don’t get to see,” Sheridan, a retired Marine lieutenant colonel, said.

Allowing the outside community to visit the installation builds cohesion between the military and the community, Ward said.

“It lets them know that we’re here for them and we support them just as much as they support us because we’re a team regardless,” he explained.

The Boy Scouts were appreciative that the Soldiers took time out on a Saturday to show them around, Sheridan said.

“It’s another opportunity to see what our military service does for our country,” he explained. “It gives them a better appreciation of the hardships that some people go through.”

Ward said visits to the installation allow the Boy Scouts and the community to see Soldiers as people.

“We have a very unique and specific job to do, but we are just people too,” Ward said. “They’re always welcome to come and visit.”
