Soldiers of 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division certified as combat lifesavers at Fort Stewart, Ga., April 19-21, 2016.
Soldiers who complete the combat lifesaver, CLS, course are trained to prevent casualties on the battlefield. The course teaches different medical procedures, like how to apply pressure dressings, bandages and tourniquets, perform needle chest decompressions, and execute buddy carry techniques.
Army medics are small in numbers and can only care for a limited number of casualties. With CLS training, non-medic Soldiers can sustain injured Soldiers until they receive additional medical assistance.
“It is a force multiplier” said Sgt. Jeffrey Tong, medic of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1-30th Inf. “If Soldiers can be proficient at CLS, it can help medics facilitate medical care on the ground and greatly decrease the death rate.”
