MCB QUANTICO, Va. -- Across the nation, United States Marines have been lining up for the opportunity to become the face and voice of the Corps.

A casting call tour visited 11 locations nation-wide aboard nine Marine Corps bases. The tour began on April 4 and visited a new location almost every day until it concluded on April 19.

“We’re trying to see what they are like on camera, what their voice sounds like and see if they would freeze-up when they see the big lights,” said Matt Covington, a copywriter and associate creative director with J. Walter Thompson, the contracted advertising agency for Marine Corps Recruiting Command.

Approximately 1,500 Marines auditioned so far, according to Vincent Bradley, a MCRC action officer for the casting call tour. Marines who applied took a series of photos and were interviewed on camera.

“One thing that caught my attention when I was a poolee was the posters and seeing that all of them had nothing but males,” said Cpl. Diana Castillo, an administrative clerk at Officer Candidates School, Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. “It was when I saw a poster with a female on it that I realized I can do this. If I do make it, I want to motivate another person to do the same.”

As part of the audition, Marines shared their experiences in the Marine Corps and why they wanted to be a part of the advertisements.

“I want to represent what I love—the Marine Corps,” said Cpl. Gunnar I. Naughton, a Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear defense specialist for Reaction Force Company, Naval Support Facility Indian Head, Maryland. “I believe the Marine Corps represents the best things about our country and I’m dedicated to that.”

The tour’s intent was to gather a large, diverse base of Marines who are interested in auditioning, according to Bradley. Those who applied will be selected approximately 90 days after the conclusion of the casting call.

“I think leaving your mark by starring in a Marine Corps commercial draws a lot of Marines forward,” said Covington. “The whole point of being a Marine is to make a difference, and if you are the one highlighted in the commercial, you are really at the forefront of getting the next generation of Marines to come forward.”

    J. Walter Thompson and MCRC will select Marines who they believe best represent the Corps and plan to forward their packages to the Commandant of the Marine Corps for final approval the first week of May. When decided, the Marines will be notified and receive temporary additional duty orders for production of advertisements.

“Once we have identified the Marines who we want, it’s about deciding how to use them, whether that be web series, videos or commercials,” said Covington.

Marines will not be notified at the same time, according to Bradley. Many Marines will be notified past the 90 day threshold of the selection process because there are several different advertisements they can be used for.

Having a large pool of quality applicants allows the creative team to visualize which Marine would be good for a particular advertisement, said Covington.

The tour may have ended, but the casting call is still available online, according to Gunnery Sgt. Robert A. Kelm, an advertisement chief for MCRC. Marines can visit MCRC’s website under the “casting” tab on the navigation bar. Online applications will no longer be accepted after April 30.

“I am not just here interviewing people,” said Covington. “I’m one of the creators, and I can’t wait to see this thing live.”
