LINTHICUM, Maryland (April 14, 2016) – Capt. Mark Ballantyne, operations officer with the District of Columbia Army National Guard (DCARNG), Mobilization Augmentation Command (MAC), recognized his civilian employer before a small group of Northrop Grumman Mission Systems employees here.

The company received two Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) awards. The Patriot Award was presented to Ballantyne’s direct supervisor, and the Above and Beyond Award to the Northrop Grumman Corporation (NGC).

Ballantyne’s direct supervisor, Stanley Stigdon, Sector Director International Market Development, received the Patriot Award, which recognizes individuals. They are employers who support through a wide-range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families and granting leaves of absence if needed.

“This leader has been recognized by his National Guard employee as being extremely supportive of his military service when answering the call to duty,” said Retired Army Colonel, Jean M. Hulet, Maryland Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve State Chairperson, who presented the award.

“Stan’s support for my service obligations is above and beyond what I would expect of any supervisor, especially one who is as busy as himself,” Ballantyne said.

Stigdon demonstrated a commitment to professional development of not only Ballantyne, but the other employees who are currently serving.

“I am humbled and honored to be recognized for what I feel is a minimal effort in comparison to the time, energy, and sacrifice that our reserve service members and their families provide for the enduring security of our nation,” Stigdon said.

The Above and Beyond Award, is presented to companies for surpassing the legal requirements of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA).

"ESGR recognizes employers who provide their National Guard or Reserve employees additional, non-mandated benefits such as differential or full pay to offset lost wages, extended health benefits and other similar benefits,” Hulet said.

Air Force retired Maj. Gen., Steve “Goldy” Goldfein, executive Vice President of Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, accepted the award on the company’s behalf.

“Receiving this award exemplifies Northrop Grumman’s commitment to our Armed Forces and their mission,” he said. “To know that Northrop Grumman is considered a leader in supporting our Guard and Reserve men and women is an amazing accomplishment for the entire Mission Systems team.”

Goldfein served 30 years in the U.S. Air Force. The company incorporates military culture, which is understood by its employees who are either veterans or current reservists.

“It is important to me on a personal level that I work at a company that gives back to those who give so much – and Northrop Grumman is unwavering in their support of our military men and women,” Goldfein said.

Ballantyne explained how the Northrop Grumman culture embodies the Army Values:

Loyalty – Since our primary customer/partner organizations are the uniformed military services, I believe that our employees have a higher degree of loyalty and dedication to the work they do, as it contributes to the mission of our men and women serving abroad.

Duty – Many of the advanced technologies that Northrop Grumman produces, not only gives our service members an advantage on the battlefield, but also contributes to keeping them out of harm’s way. This is why many of the employees view their employment as not only a job, but also a duty to our nation.

Respect – Respect underscores the way that business is done at Northrop Grumman. The company has a culture that emphasizes respect for diversity, new ideas and challenging the status quo. The mutual respect for colleagues and business partners is a contributing factor to the company’s continued success in the marketplace.

Selfless Service – Because of the Loyalty and Duty values that employees have regarding their jobs, it is not unlikely to see someone go above-and-beyond their defined role to accomplish a work-related task/mission.

Honor – Due to the uniformed services that Northrop Grumman supports, there is an immense sense of pride and honor in the work that we do.

Integrity – Integrity permeates the work culture at Northrop Grumman and is a value that the company takes very seriously.

Personal Courage – Whether by technology, reach back, or on-the-ground support, the modern Battlefield can have NGC employees both behind, and forward deployed with, our service members.

“Being able to recognize, through an ESGR award, the support that my supervisor and company has shown for me as a service member is very simply, just one of the ways that I can express my gratitude for their support and encouragement,” Ballantyne said.

ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve of the United States.
