2016 CBIRF Change of Command Ceremony

    INDIAN HEAD, MD, UNITED STATES

    04.21.2016

Story by Sgt. Santiago G. Colon Jr.

Chemical Biological Incident Response Force (CBIRF)

INDIAN HEAD, Md. – The Commanding Officer of Chemical Biological Incident Response Force (CBIRF), U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command (MARFORCOM) Col. Stephen E. Redifer, is scheduled to relinquish command to Col. Michael L. Carter in a ceremony at the Naval Support Facility (NSF) Indian Head Helicopter Pad aboard NSF Indian Head, Md., May 18, 2016 at 2 P.M.

The presiding officer for the Change of Command Ceremony will be the MARFORCOM Commander Lt. Gen. John E. Wissler.

Redifer took command of CBIRF in May 2013. The Chemical Biological Incident Response Force, or CBIRF, is a specialized unit that consists of 500 Marines, Sailors, civilians, and over 40 military occupational specialties, and is manned, trained, and equipped to respond to the most deadly incidents involving chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high-yield explosives (CBRNE) hazards anywhere in the continental United States and abroad.

Under Redifer’s command, CBIRF participated in Exercise SUDDEN RESPONSE, Exercise VIBRANT RESPONSE, and Exercise CAPITAL SHIELD each year in order to test and sharpen standing operations and concept plans. These demanding exercises enable the seamless integration of CBIRF into supported Joint Task Forces and support the execution of combined military/civilian consequence management operations. The unit also supported the Presidential State of the Union addresses, Pope Francis’ visit to the U.S., and the 2016 Nuclear Security Summit.

Over the last three years, CBIRF deployed Marines and Sailors in support of Geographic Combatant Commanders and Marine Corps Component Commanders for events such as III MEF’s ULCHI FREEDOM GUARDIAN, II MEF’s Exercise AFRICAN LION, and US Central Command’s INVINCIBLE SENTRY. This ability of CBIRF to maintain a demanding schedule and consistently perform to the highest standards in their field has served to cement CBIRF’s reputation in the Department of Defense, interagency, and international communities.

Carter is scheduled to assume the position of commanding officer of CBIRF after serving as the Readiness Branch Head, Operations Division; Plans, Policies, and Operations at the Pentagon.

Media personnel interested in attending are requested to RSVP with CBIRF Public Affairs by May 1 at santiago.colon@usmc.mil, or by phone at (Office) 301-744-1092, or (Cell) 240-419-1858.
