This unique, eight-man team, known as a J-team, is comprised of multiple Air Force specialties from the 1st Special Operations Civil Engineering Squadron, specifically designed around Air Force Special Operations Command’s mission.
“J-Team is everything that Civil Engineering needs to roll in with Special Operations Forces teams to develop a base from the ground up,” said Capt. Alan Vaughn, wing inspection team lead with the 1st SOCES.
The different specialties that make up the team are power production, heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC), horizontal construction, structures, engineering assistant, utilities, electric, water and fuels, along with one company grade officer.
Having the small team integrated within the Special Operations Forces community increases mission capability when needing to move quickly to enter and exit the area, which can be critical for mission success.
Basic fundamentals of J-team were recently tested and trained when they deployed the Air Rapid Response Kit (ARRK) during exercise Frigid Archer, to demonstrate the distinctive capabilities of what the personnel and equipment can accomplish.
CE Airmen were in charge of designing, building, maintaining and dismantling the infrastructure of the temporary base, from start to finish.
As one of the two ARRK equipment sets in the Air Force, training with this kit is key for future teams in expanding this knowledge to more CE Airmen, while also highlighting support capabilities to SOF teams.
There was a total of 250 Airmen participating in the exercise. Sixty Airmen came from the 1st SOCES to learn more about this equipment.
“Should a real world crisis ever unfold that requires military support, this would give the Air Force the capability to set up a base and provide all the necessary life support functions to all members that would operate from that base for operations,” Vaughn said.
In the end, as a fully functioning base, this team and equipment become force multipliers enabling conventional, humanitarian and combat operations for 30 to 60 day operations.
