Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing leadership acknowledge volunteers at the annual volunteer appreciation celebration aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, April 14.

Marine Corps Community Services hosts the ceremony each year during National Volunteer Appreciation Week to acknowledge the contributions that volunteers make to the MCAS Miramar and San Diego communities.

MCCS recognized Marine, Sailor and civilian volunteers with the Single Marine Program, Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society, as well as other organizations from MCAS Miramar, in a ceremony that included gift baskets and a concert from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band.

“The spirit that drives volunteers is unique to each person,” said Deanna Angel, director of Marine and Family Programs. “It may be a core value instilled at a young age, a desire and motivation to help others who are less fortunate, a calling to serve others, a way to connect to the community or simply time and skills given to make the world a better place.”

Volunteers from MCAS Miramar worked approximately 60,000 collective hours last year, a significant jump from the 4,000 hours accumulated the year prior.

“These volunteers set an example for young Marines to follow,” said Col. Jason Woodworth, commanding officer of MCAS Miramar. “[Marines] see others who have taken the opportunity to serve and it really gives them a chance to learn and be mentored from these individuals.”

Woodworth and Maj. Gen. Michael Rocco, commanding general of 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, attended this year’s ceremony, and accepted a photo poster that highlighted the volunteering opportunities available to the MCAS Miramar community.

According to Woodworth, the legacy that the volunteers pass on to future generations is something that cannot be measured.
