The Georgian Armed Forces hosted a transfer of authority between the 22nd and 52nd Georgian Light Infantry Battalions at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, April 13.

Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Bannister, U.S. Forces Afghanistan-Support Commanding General; Lt. Col. Matthew McColly, Task Force Buffalo Commander; and Col. Alexander Kiknadze, Minister of Defense of Georgia in Afghanistan, presented the soldiers of the 22nd LIB with their NATO medals and congratulated on their successful tour.

Bagram Provincial Governor and the Afghan Nation Army leadership also presented the Georgian soldiers with plaques and decorations to recognize their appreciation.

The Georgian forces in Afghanistan work directly with Task Force Buffalo and provide over watch and protection to the more than 20,000 coalition, civilian and contract personnel on base. They are also involved in responsible for force protection and humanitarian missions in towns surrounding the base.

“As many of you know, the Republic of Georgia is the second largest contributor to troops in Afghanistan after the United States,” McColly said. “Task Force Buffalo is the largest unit, and a key component in accomplishing our mission as the Bagram ground defense force.”

Lt. Col. Manuchar Barbakadze said to remember the sacrifices of those who have perished and recognize everyone's accomplishments.

“It was an honor for us to serve here, side by side with coalition forces, in order to support the national government, national army, police and the people of Bagram, Afghanistan.”
