HULMAN FIELD AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Ind. – Indiana National Guard Soldiers with the 19th CBRNE Enhanced Response Force Package’s Search and Extraction unit practiced their mission on a rubble pile with simulated victims of a chemical explosion at the Combined Armed Collective Training Facility near Camp Grayling, Michigan, April 7, 2016.
The 19th CERFP has several specialized units, one of which is the S&E unit.
“CERFP is an Air Force and Army joint organization that helps to provide local first responders with essential assets in a time of crisis,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Gregory D. Motz, 19th CERFP commander. “It could be a natural disaster, a terrorist attack, a chemical spill and what we do is we go into the contaminated area and we recover live people or deceased people and we decontaminate them and provide them basic medical care so that they can move to a civilian hospital to receive further treatment.”
S&E plays a vital role in the CERFP mission during any disaster or chemical incident.
“Search and Extraction is the element of CERFP that is actually going to go and get the victims, anybody trapped in a structural collapse or any sort of confined space in the event of some CERFP incident,” said U.S. Army Spc. Franklin Gentry, 74 delta CBRN specialist. “We’re the guys that actually go down range, dig the people out and get them to medical.”
This training exercise gave the S&E unit a chance to improve the already new aspect to the 1413th Engineering Company.
“As new as this is to the 1413th Engineering Company, morale is good, people are energetic. They are ready to learn and ready to work, and it’s going to go very well. I feel very good about this in the future,” said Gentry.
While at the Combined Armed Collective Training Facility, the S&E unit was able to learn new capabilities to apply to their skill set.
“We worked with some of the cadre on site and they showed us a few new things,” said Gentry. “I learned a whole new anchoring system for lift and hauls. It was pretty exciting.”
With new training under their belt and new experiences to work from, the 19th CERFP S&E unit will be Always Ready and Always There.
