Marines took time out of their work schedule to increase their proficiency in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, April 5.

The program consists of five belt levels ranging from tan to black and trains Marines in hand-to-hand and close quarter’s combat techniques derived from various martial arts styles.

Sgt. Giovanny Mayer, a flight planner with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron and a Sylmar, California native, leads MCMAP courses for any Marines interested in advancing their belt level.

According to Mayer, Marines should always strive to improve themselves and MCMAP is a great way to do it.

“Don’t put a limit on what you learn,” said Mayer. “Once you stop trying to improve yourself, you begin hurting yourself.”

Mayer holds his MCMAP courses Monday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the dojo inside the Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting building on the flight line.
