    Story by Sgt. Carlene Vera

    143d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary)

The Best Warrior a United States Army Reserve annual competition that tests Soldiers mentally and physically on every imaginable skill from urban warfare simulations to board interviews and physical fitness to basic warrior tasks and drills.

For some some of the participants, the Best Warrior Competition is all about having a chance to showcase their very best Soldier skills and physical fitness, however this was a dream come true for Pfc. Matthew Ward from the 812th Transportation Company based in Charlotte, North Carolina representing the 518th Sustainment Brigade.

“I would define a Best Warrior as a Soldier who is all around great on absolutely everything”, said Pfc. Ward. Before joining the Army Reserve Ward always had the desire to of wanting to compete amongst the best, to make it this level in the competition representing his unit is a major accomplishment as a junior Soldier.

These warriors were assessed on their breadth of knowledge, through either oral or written communication and scored based on their performance on all combined events. Some of the events performed by the warriors included a 10-mile road march, day and night land navigation, weapons qualifications, Army Physical Fitness Test, Appearance Board, Confidence Course, Warrior Task Training, defense measures and a few unscheduled mystery events.

The Army Physical Fitness Test a three-event individual physical performance test was administered the first day. “I am mentally prepared and I feel great after that run, I almost max out my scores but I missed by one point,” said Sgt. Stephanie Lanham from the 518th Sustainment Brigade.

Soldiers that participate in the competition are typically winners of the battalion and brigade level prior to competing at the 143d ESC. There are two separate winners at this this level a non-commissioned officer and Soldier category.
The winners will represent the entire 143d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) at the 377th Theater Sustainment Command 2016 best warrior and the winners of that competition will advance to compete at the United States Army Reserve Command.

Pfc Matthew Ward was announced the winner for the Soldier category with a total score of more than 794 points. Representing the 642nd Regional Support Group and winner of the NCO category was Sgt. Wayne Jones with a score of more than 662 points. Both winners will continue to train hard in order to prepare for the 377th Theater Sustainment Command best warrior competition in early April.

“I wanted to come to this competition and actually compete, and all the competitors gave me a run for my money, it was awesome and I enjoyed it,” said Pfc. Ward.
