    NECC/EWTGLANT Celebrates Women's History Month

    VIRGINIA BEACH, VA, UNITED STATES

    03.24.2016

    Story by Jennifer Cragg

    Navy Expeditionary Combat Command

The event coordinated by NECC's Multicultural Heritage Committee invited Nancy Harned, NECC/NECCPAC Executive Director; Fleet Master Chief (AW/SW) April D. Beldo, Manpower, Personnel, Training, and Education (MPT&E), and retired Chief Yeoman Lillian Jenkins to speak about their experiences.

Harned, who entered the Senior Executive Service in May 2007, discussed the variety of assignments she has held during her civilian career and the mentors who assisted her along the way. Some of the previous assignments Harned held include serving in the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research and Technology, in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Research & Engineering); deputy director of the Programming Division on the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV N80); deputy branch head for Warfighting Support Analysis in OPNAV N81; and program officer at the Office of Naval Research.

"I have found that it helps to get the right education, build experience, and lean on help from your mentors. They can be critical to help give you the self-confidence to take the chance - I know that my mentors were helpful when I wasn't feeling ready for a new challenge," said Harned.

Harned challenged the audience to take on "scary" challenges. She added that life is been full of choices and some of them may be scary, but "if you prepare for the risks and are ready to deal with the doubts, it's the scary choices that are usually the most rewarding."

Beldo also spoke during the ceremony about the many trail blazers who paved the way for countless Sailors to follow in their footsteps.

"The previous trail blazers have made it possible to do whatever we set our minds to," said Beldo, who added that there is only one person who stands in your way and suggested to "check the mirror."

Jenkins, who retired from the U.S. Navy, discussed the importance of taking care of our Sailors' support systems.

"Their support is what makes it possible for us to serve our country," said Jenkins, who currently serves as a manpower analyst at NECC.

NECC is an enduring warfighting force providing sea-to-shore and inland operating environment capabilities across the full range of military operations that is focused on delivering combat effective expeditionary forces ready for worldwide operations now and into the future.
