“We are trying to give Soldiers a place to relax and get something other than a Meal Ready to Eat (MRE) for lunch,” said Grapp.
Grapp and a handful of Soldier volunteers from other units are operating the Morale, Welfare and Recreation facility during annual training being conducted at Fort Polk.
U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Robert Cody, 218th MEB senior technical engineer, manages operations at the MWR facility and, along with leadership from the 218th MEB, made a plan to have the space for Soldiers to relax and unwind during annual training prior to movement to JRTC.
“We are here to give Soldiers a place to come relax, and get hot food in a field environment, as well as support the overall unit when it comes to the needs of the Soldiers,” said Cody.
Many of the Soldiers come to spend their free time in the MRW playing cards to pass the time, while others take in a movie and enjoy hot food from the grill.
“This is awesome,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Jordan Bermudez, 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 41st Transportation Company. “It’s really great to have a place to go other than the barracks.”
Since the March 16, 2016 opening of the MWR grill, the volunteers have served an estimated 2,100 Soldiers.
“As long as where we deploy allows us to set up and cook for the Soldiers, we will,” added Cody.
The members of the 218th MEB, along with members of the Michigan National Guard and U.S. Army Reservists, are taking part in a two-week long exercise called Operation Cyclone Assist at the JRTC.
