MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. - Families, friends and coworkers gathered to recognize two members of the 824th Base Defense Squadron who were named Honorary Air Force Office of Special Investigations Special Agents, March 22, here.
U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Aaron Frederick and Staff Sgt. Bradley Mock, 824th BDS, served in Tactical Security Element, Task Force Crimson, along with the six Airmen who were killed when a suicide bomber rammed an explosive motorcycle into a joint patrol outside of Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan.
“Since 2007, both the 820th Base Defense Group and TSE made sure that other Airmen have come home safely and we’ve done [that job] superbly,” said Brig. Gen. Keith Givens, Air Force OSI commander. “Today, we’re recognizing two [defenders] who knew that their life was something worth risking [for others].
“It is OSI’s honor to have heroes like this as part of our community.”
Less than 60 individuals in the AFOSI’s 68 years of history have been chosen as honorary agents and Frederick and Mock marked the fourth and fifth Defenders and active duty Airmen to receive such an honor.
“Until this incident, we’ve only honored 56 individuals as honorary special agents and none of them were Defenders,” said Givens. “The enemy knew that our TSE was making a difference by taking insurgents off the battlefield and making them less effective.”
Givens also mentioned that since both forces combined, they have identified over 14,000 threats and taken over 4,000 terrorists and enemy combatants, and that the 820 BDG have continuously provided force protections support for OSI agents outside-the-wire while deployed.
“Two badges, one mission,” Givens stated. “We have trained together, worked together, [fought] together and died together,” said Givens.
“This bond between OSI and the Defender community will never be broken,” he added.
Both recipients were presented a badge and credential as tribute for their heroic acts.
“On behalf of the entire nation we thank you again for your selfless acts and your continued security of this grateful nation. It is an honor and privilege to serve beside you each day,” said Capt. Christopher Daniels, 824th BDS officer in charge of the Medical Cell and narrator, as he concluded the ceremony.
