CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait - The U.S. Embassy in Kuwait partnered with the Kuwait Ministry of Information to hold a special screening of “The Liberation of Kuwait, Honoring the Veterans of Desert Storm,” a documentary film highlighting the 25th anniversary of the liberation of Kuwait, for U.S. Army Central Soldiers on Camp Arifjan, March 9.
Ambassador Douglas Silliman, the U.S ambassador to Kuwait, and Sheikh Salman Sabah Al-Salem Al-Homoud Al-Sabah, the minister of information for Kuwait, attended the event and presented veterans from the Gulf War, both coalition members and Kuwaiti, a commemorative book highlighting the events before, during and after the liberation of Kuwait.
“This film will be a lasting remembrance of the partnership between the two countries,” said Silliman. “I want to make sure the service members understand the heritage that they are carrying forward with their service in Kuwait. It is obvious that the people who participated had a profound effect on Kuwait.”
Silliman wanted to make sure that the military members deployed to Kuwait understand that they are part of that legacy, part of the partnership.
“It is fitting that we premier this film at Camp Arifjan,” said Hickman. “This base represents a commitment and a partnership between our two nations, not only to mutual defense, but the security and stability across the region.”
According to Hickman when describing the partnership between the U.S. and Kuwait, many adjectives can describe the relationship; professional militaries, allies, and teams. However, the best adjective that describes the partnership is friends.
“We are the living examples of past experiences that the U.S. and Kuwait share,” said retired Kuwaiti air force Maj. Gen. Mohammad Mubarak, Gulf War veteran. “We are, as Kuwaitis, very grateful for the U.S. and their leadership liberating Kuwait and the great support we had from them in rebuilding the Kuwaiti military and the state in general.”
Mubarak added, “The new Kuwaiti generation will benefit from this film a great deal. It has a lot of lessons learned and a lot of aspects to consider for the future.”
According to Mubarak, Desert Storm was the cornerstone in many aspects that influenced coalition warfare. The conflict changed and developed military and political strategies to obtain peace and build humanitarian operations.
“This film honors the U.S. and Kuwaiti veterans and heroes of Desert storm,” said Al-Sabah. “This film is a testimonial to all the brave men and women who served and sacrificed their time and lives to liberate Kuwait.”
