LANSING, Mich. - Lt. Col. William Humes, the Michigan National Guard state public affairs officer arranged and participated in multiple press conferences related to the Guard’s role in distributing drinking water and related supplies to residents of Flint after elevated lead levels were detected in the municipal water system.

More than 270 Michigan National Guard members stepped forward to serve the residents of Flint and support civilian authorities where needed. Hundreds of media requests for information have been routed through the State Joint Information Center where Humes was posted for most of January 2016. Humes assigned Staff Sgt. Thomas Vega to participate in JIC meetings and maintain water distribution site awareness until Guard support is no longer necessary in Flint.

Humes, previously a member of the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 125th Infantry, gained extensive media management experience during a 2012 deployment to Afghanistan where he served as a unit public affairs representative. He was responsible for photography, feature copy, media escorting, credentialing and press conference management.

After completing his mobilization, Humes joined the Lansing-based, 46th Military Police Command, one of only two police commands in the United States Army, where he served as the public affairs officer for the command and control response element of the Defense Support of Civil Authorities mission, a multi-state partnership of Guardsmen who respond to assist civilian authorities in the event of a nuclear, chemical, biological or radiological incident in the United States. Vibrant Response is the annual training event where C2CRE response elements function at peak performance, testing their skills at every imaginable communication-related task.

Humes was selected as the Michigan National Guard State Public Affairs Officer in October, 2014. Six staff members assist Humes in telling the Michigan National Guard story from the MING Joint Forces Headquarters in Lansing. Feature stories and photos have been posted to minationalguard.com.
