ARABIAN GULF – A member of Amphibious Squadron FOUR (PHIBRON 4) was presented with a Navy and Marine Corps Association (NMA) Peer Leadership Award aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) March 4.

Lt. j.g. Katherine Mann, from Berwyn, Pennsylvania, was nominated by peers at her previous command, USS Essex (LHD 2), for her exceptional leadership ability. Mann was one of 14 junior officers Navy-wide to receive the 2014 NMA Leadership Award.

During her time at Essex, Mann served as the operational and information divisional officer for eight months and the auxiliary’s division officer for 14 months, leading approximately 50 Sailors in the maintenance and care of the ship’s hydraulics, steam and heat equipment, compressors and diesel systems.

Recipients of the Navy and Marine Corps Association Leadership Award are selected by their peers for exhibiting the highest levels of excellence in leadership.

Mann said she was elated to learn her peers on Essex submitted her as a candidate for such an award.

“I am very humbled to have been nominated by my peers on Essex,” said Mann. “I really enjoyed my tour there because of the incredible people and I learned from both my Sailors and other officers in the wardroom.”

Capt. Augustus P. Bennett, commodore, PHIBRON 4, presented the award to Mann during an all-hands call aboard the Kearsarge. Bennett said that he was honored to present such an impressive award to one of his staff members.

“It prides me to know that Lt. j.g. Mann joins us with such profound endorsements by both her peers and her leadership from Essex,” said Bennett. “Katherine has already made a positive impact on the staff and I am excited to see what is in store for her at the command.”

Mann transferred from the Essex to the PHIBRON 4 staff in December 2015.

Mann said her assignment at Essex primed her for future leadership roles and she hopes to create inspiring impressions on her peers at PHIBRON 4.

“On Essex I learned better time management and the importance of working as a team onboard,” said Mann. “In Engineering Department, nothing works on the ship unless you have talented, trained sailors who have both khaki and material support.”

“Now, I am really looking forward to learning more about our role that binds all these ships together into a powerful Amphibious Ready Group,” Mann added. “Everyone has been so welcoming and helpful as I have gotten settled over the past few months and I hope to create good relationships across all the various departments and keep an enthusiastic attitude to learn something new every day during my tour at PHIBRON 4.”

NMA sponsors more than 400 awards annually for presentation by the Commanders of Naval Air Forces, Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Marine Forces Atlantic and Pacific and the Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy to those officers and enlisted personnel who have been selected by their peers as outstanding leaders in their respective communities.

Kearsarge is the flagship for the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group (KSGARG) and, with the embarked 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), is deployed in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.
