    311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command

LAS VEGAS – Sgt. Maj. David Dean, 650th Regional Support Group senior logistics noncommissioned officer in charge, organized and conducted a Best Warrior Competition for his Soldiers at Nellis Air Force Base and the unit’s headquarters Feb. 18-20.

The Best Warrior Competition is an annual competition overseen by the Department of the Army as a means of identifying and recognizing Soldiers in active, special operations, National Guard and Army Reserve components of the United States Army.

Sgt. Edgar Macias and Spc. Fakhimi, 227th Transportation Company, Sgt. Scott Hart, 483rd Transportation Battalion, and Spc. Kenny Ochoa, 481st TC, endured the Army physical fitness test, consisting of pushups, situps and a two-mile run, maneuvered through a land navigation course and hiked a six-mile road march.

During the three-day competition, participants are tested on their Army aptitude, conquering urban warfare simulations, board interviews, physical fitness tests, written exams, Warrior tasks and battle drills relevant to today’s operating environment.

“This competition is an opportunity to challenge our Soldiers under a controlled stress environment,” said Philip Sagayo, 650th RSG special operations NCO. “We practice these basic Army skills over and over until our movements become muscle memory.”

The winner of this event will go on to compete at the 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command level and then to the 79th Sustainment Command. The ultimate goal is to make it to the Department of the Army level.

The purpose of the Best Warrior Competition to provide units an environment conducive to conducting multi-echelon collective training and to provide an assessment specific to achieving the training readiness aim points, preparing Soldiers for entry into the available force pool.

“This time of year when we conduct this competition is my favorite part of soldiering,” said Dean. “What we are really doing is training our future leader and I have always said that we are training our replacements.”

This competition was supported by 650th RSG Soldiers that included Sgt. 1st Class Philip Sagayo, Staff Sgt. Jose Torresmartinez, Sgt. Miguel Castelan, Spc. Alfonso Martinez and Pvt. Sheila Viray, who worked long hours for the entire competition.

In 2011, the 650th RSG was realigned under the 311th ESC and took control of three battalions: the 314th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 469th CSSB and the 483rd Transportation Battalion. Its area of operation spans over three states, including California, Nevada and Arizona.
