GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba - Pirates busied themselves doing what pirates do best – gambling, kidnapping, double crossing, revenge and being scoundrels. Now they have the added task of investigating a murder. Everyone is a suspect!

Approximately 20 guests took part in a pirate-themed murder mystery dinner sponsored by the Morale, Welfare & Recreation Liberty Center and library, Nov. 15, at U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

“It’s not like a murder mystery theater like they have back in the states where you go and watch a production,” said Sarah Kadis, the MWR Liberty coordinator. “You are actually part of the game.”

The event took place at the library with guests dressed in pirate hats, hooks, mustaches and eye patches. While finishing dinner, guests introduced their characters to start the game.

Guests received their characters’ basic information to use for the game, said Army Maj. Bryan Reed, the Joint Task Force Guantanamo deputy engineer. In the character sheets given to each player, there is shared
    information and concealed information.

For the hidden information to be released, a direct question about the circumstance has to be asked. The object is to ask each person enough questions to figure out who murdered the captain. Participants have to be honest and tell what is given to them.

“The ship had taken off from port and a few days later the captain was killed, so it was our job to find out who it was that killed the captain,” said Reed, who had never been to a murder mystery dinner. “We did it by
interviewing everybody else that was on board the ship. Pick up on different clues, piece the clues together and then at the end of the night we guessed who the murderer was.”

According to Kadis, to figure out how to come up with the themed event, the staff must choose the number of guests who will attend.

Then they must determine how many male and female characters they want in the game and the age limit of those who will attend, which helps them form how the events of the murder mystery will go.

This is the third murder mystery dinner Kadis and Amy Roumell, the librarian, have held since Kadis arrived on island. In the past, they have held the events once a quarter with Christmas and Mardi Gras themed dinners.

“I think it went really well,” said Kadis. “It seemed that everybody enjoyed themselves and had fun. We had some new people and some who had never done it at all. It’s just a good time to come out with some friends, have a free meal, have a couple drinks and hang out in a setting you normally wouldn’t think would be conducive to a murder mystery dinner.”

A few guests went to the library to observe how the program worked to hold a similar event elsewhere.

“I really did not know what to expect at all, it sounded cool and I like the game Clue,” said Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Keisha Powell, a religious program specialist with the JTF chaplain’s office.

Powell said, she came to the event to find out what information she could use to hold a murder mystery dinner for the Girl Scouts here, so they can earn their detective badges.

Murder mystery dinners can be a unique experience.
Next time the event occurs, take the opportunity to see if you can put your detective skills to work and solve the murder.

At this time, there is no a set date for the next murder mystery.
