FARGO, N.D. — The North Dakota National Guard’s 141st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade (MEB) welcomed a new senior enlisted leader during a change of responsibility ceremony Feb. 26 at the Armed Forces Reserve Center here.

Command Sgt. Maj. David Lien assumed duties as the unit’s senior noncommissioned officer from Command Sgt. Maj. Mark Nelson, who served in the position for the past two years. Nelson was selected to as the senior enlisted leader for the North Dakota National Guard.

“Command Sgt. Maj. Nelson is one of the best command sergeant majors I have worked with in my career,” said Lt. Col. James R. Olson, deputy commander of the 141st MEB. “He sets the example for all professional noncommissioned officers and Soldiers to emulate and was a visible leader and teacher to the Soldiers of the brigade. We are all proud of his selection as the North Dakota Guard’s senior enlisted leader and we wish him well in this assignment.”

Nelson has nearly 34 years of service with the U.S. Army Reserve and the North Dakota Army National Guard, and has deployed overseas twice. From 2005 – 2006, he served in Afghanistan with the Grand Forks, North Dakota-based 1st Battalion, 188th Air Defense Artillery and again, from 2009 – 2010, for a peacekeeping mission in Kosovo with the 141st MEB. In his new assignment as the senior enlisted leader for the North Dakota National Guard, he will report to the adjutant general and is responsible for the health, welfare, morale, training and professional development of over 4,100 Soldiers and Airmen. In his civilian profession, Nelson serves as the chief of police for the Grand Forks Police Department.

Although the 141st MEB is losing one experienced command sergeant major, the unit is gaining another in Lien, who has 29 years of military experience with the North Dakota Army National Guard. He acquired significant leadership experience as the command sergeant major for the Bismarck-based 68th Troop Command and the Minot, North Dakota-based 164th Engineer Battalion. He works full-time as the training and operations sergeant major for the North Dakota National Guard’s operations section in Bismarck. Lien served overseas from 2003 – 2005 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with the Valley City, North Dakota-based 141st Engineer Battalion and again, from 2009 – 2010, for a peacekeeping mission in Kosovo with the 141st MEB.

The time-honored change of responsibility ceremony was held in front of an audience of 141st MEB Soldiers, families and guests of the two command sergeants major, including Brig. Gen. Robert Fode, Army component commander for the North Dakota National Guard.
