MARIETTA, Ga. – To maintain medical readiness, the Georgia Army National Guard Medical Command recently divided their clinical operations from Ellenwood into two new locations, Clay National Guard Center and Fort Stewart.

“We knew we were going to be changing the concept of the way we provide health care to our Soldiers,” said Maj. Aimee E. Manion, the chief nurse for MEDCOM.

The clinical operations, formerly based out of the Oglethorpe Armory in Ellenwood, has transitioned into two clinics covering the north and south regions of Georgia. Clay National Guard Center in Marietta has welcomed one of these two clinics in October, with the grand opening scheduled for December.

“We’re decreasing the travel time for our Soldiers and again cutting costs and maximizing the time they spend here in the clinical operations,” Manion said. “Meeting our mark and meeting our mission is our goal organizationally, but for us, it’s also the satisfaction of our Soldiers.”

The main way MEDCOM has conserved funds is by using medics organic to the Georgia Army National Guard during their clinical operations to limit the need for civilian contractors.

“The overall long-term goal is the increase in medical readiness of our Soldiers,” said Lt. Col. Scott M. Hovis, MEDCOM commander.

The different locations allows for more efficiency with the flow of Soldiers through the Soldier Readiness Program. Immunizations, hearing testing, dental exams and vision testing are a few of the stations Soldiers visit during SRP.

The facility on Clay National Guard Center has designated space for units to incorporate administrative tasks into SRP and utilize Soldier’s wait time to update personnel records. This combined concept will improve the overall readiness of the Georgia Army National Guard.
