NEW RIVER, N.C. - Marine Corps Air Station New River is holding its annual Snowball Softball Tournament at the air station softball fields Jan. 30 and 31.

The Snowball Softball Tournament has been held for more than 20 years, and in earlier years, was the premier event in the region.

"The Snowball Softball Tournament used to be the first big tournament on the east coast," said Chris Miller, Marine Corps Community Services New River sports coordinator. "We had teams from teams from Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia come to the tournament, but since softball has exploded with tournaments, especially since the United States Specialty Sports Association, we don’t see as many teams come from far away."

Though there are other tournaments in the area, New River’s Snowball tournament sees teams from Virginia, Fort Bragg and South Carolina, said Miller.

Anywhere from 18 to 22 teams are expected to compete in either a recreation division or open division.

"There are many teams from the region that play in this tournament, many of whom have retired military members on their rosters," said Nicole Turner. "It offers those participants the opportunity to reconnect with the their military past and enjoy time visiting some of the best facilities the Marine Corps has to offer."

"This is not a super expensive tournament in relation to some of the other ones, so it gives them the opportunity to come out and compete against other teams, get that practice before the season and big tournaments start. And just come out and get some batting practice and have fun. Meet new folks that enjoy doing the same thing they enjoy."

Prospective teams are reminded the tournament follows Amateur Softball Association rules.

Teams wanting to participate in the tournament can register early by Jan. 15 or register late from Jan. 18 through 22 at the New River Sports Center AS-4000 or the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune Sports Office at the Goettge Memorial Field House.
