RICHMOND HILL, Ga. - Soldiers from 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment participated in a career fair Feb. 5, 2016, at Carver Elementary School.

The Soldiers participated in the school’s 17th annual career fair to support 3rd Infantry Division’s "Adopt-a-School" program while also encouraging the students to consider a future in the U.S. Army.

The Soldiers had different stations set-up for the students designed to encourage interaction with the Soldiers. A number of students enjoyed the physical training station where students were able to see and feel what it is like for a Soldier to take an Army Physical Fitness Training test. Some students challenged each other to do as many push-ups as they could in two minutes while others gathered around to watch and cheer their classmates on.

Staff Sgt. Joel Epperson, an infantryman with 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, said the students also enjoyed climbing around the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle that was part of a static display at the career fair.

"The kids think the Humvee is like a little playground," said Epperson. "Most kids enjoy looking at tanks, but it really shocked me how the kids were so interested in the Humvee and how it works."

The students also got the opportunity to wear an Improved Outer Tactical Vest. Some of them expressed how the vest was very heavy, while others challenged themselves to see how long they could wear it.

For Spc. Donzell Sahid, an infantryman with 3rd Bn., 69th Arm. Rgt., the Career Fair was a great opportunity to interact with the students and let them get a taste of what the Army has to offer.

"It was worthwhile coming out here today," said Sahid. "It wasn't just about us bringing weapons out here, but more about the job itself by getting the kids involved to ask questions about the Army."

The officer-in-charge for the battalion’s participation in the Career Day, 1st Lt. Edward Quigley, echoed Sahid’s comments and said the Army should continue to look at different ways to interact with the local community.

"I think we pretty well succeeded," said Quigley of the Career Fair. "This is something that we need to sustain and even expand in the future."
