CAMP ZAMA, Japan — Camp Zama’s Community Club hosted a party for Super Bowl 50 Feb. 8 in the CZCC Ballroom and Game Time Sports Bar for community members to watch the NFL’s Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos compete for the 2016 championship.
“There’s nothing more American than NFL football,” said Col. William B. Johnson, commander of U.S. Army Garrison Japan.
“When you’re in Japan a long way from home, it’s great to be able to get together with a group of your friends and watch the game,” said Johnson.
Doors opened at 6 a.m. Breakfast was provided and the game’s kickoff started at approximately 8:15 a.m.
Many attendees wore football jerseys in support of the Panthers, Broncos or their favorite team.
“Our goal was to provide the community with a great opportunity to come together and enjoy the game,” said Randy Benton, general manager of CZCC. “There are lots of new people here who probably would not have not met each other if they watched the game at home.”
During half time, four NFL All-Star Cheerleaders from the Indianapolis Colts, St. Louis Rams, New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans, respectively, performed as well as the Jubilly Dance Troupe from Tokyo.
Johnson presented the Commander’s Cup to U.S. Army Medical Department for having the most points in all the Camp Zama competitions for 2015.
Throughout the morning, community members had the opportunity to register for and receive door prizes courtesy of the Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation’s commercial sponsorship.
The NFL Cheerleaders also took time to meet with attendees to take photos and sign autographs.
Summer, cheerleader for the New Orleans Saints, said standing with members of the Armed Forces during the televised performance of the national anthem by Lady GaGa was an emotional, proud moment because of her gratitude to them.
“I just cannot thank them enough for their service and sacrifices,” said Summer. “This has been an amazing experience to bring our troops a piece of home and I hope to come back one day.”
The Broncos defeated the Panthers 24 to 10.
The event concluded with several presentations and prize giveaways, including a grand prize — two round-trip tickets to the U.S. from United Airlines — to Vonetta Weatherspoon, community member from Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan.
Capt. Samuel Sellers, operations officer in charge assigned to 78th Signal Battalion, said this was his third year attending the Super Bowl Party.
“The community club always does a stellar job, and each year gets better,” said Sellers.
“I think these events are extremely because we get some down time to interact with each other and enjoy the game.”
