FORT STEWART, Ga. – Soldiers with 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, are deploying from Fort Stewart, Ga. this month in support of U.S. Army Europe.

A select team from four companies within 3-15 Inf. will act as mission command and trainers for the Partner/Advise Training Team under Joint Multinational Training Group – Ukraine at the International Peacekeeping and Security Center in western Ukraine.

According to the 3-15 Inf. Commander Lt. Col. Nathan Minami, they will be focused on developing the Ukrainian Army’s ability to conduct defensive operations at a battalion level, enabling them to defend the national sovereignty of their nation. Additionally, 3-15 Inf. will work to develop a training capacity for Ukrainian soldiers, allowing them to train and develop their own military forces and perform PATT mission command.

The mission for Minami’s troops is projected to last 10 months, where they will work in a joint capacity with California National Guard Soldiers and other allied partner militaries from Canada, Great Britain, Lithuania and Poland.

“We’re really excited because we’re going to be able to work with our nation’s strategic allies,” Minami said. “We’ll be able to share best practices, tactics, techniques, procedures, and we’ll have a lot of opportunities to learn from our allies, as well as our Ukrainian partners.”

This was a short notice mission, but Minami said his Soldiers are ready. 3-15 Inf. recently trained at the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, La. with 2nd IBCT and conducted various preparatory and other exercises the last two years.

“Our ‘Can Do’ Soldiers have always demonstrated that they’re extremely mentally agile, flexible, adaptive, and resilient,” Minami said, quoting his regimental motto. “Our Soldiers, junior leaders, company-level leaders always do a fantastic job, and really it’s our Soldiers and junior leaders that make the difference. That’s why we’re the right battalion to be picked for this mission.”

Within his ranks, Minami will have a few hundred Soldiers consisting of members of his battalion headquarters, two infantry companies and Soldiers from 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion. Minami said those from 9th BEB will give them a “stronger ability to train their Ukrainian allies in more warfighting functions, such as engineering, intelligence and protection.”
